Fifth Grade Curriculum

 

Spelling

Your child’s spelling program may be different from what you’ve come to expect as “spelling.” Instead of weekly lists of words to memorize, this program emphasizes the learning of important words, not for a Friday test, but for a lifetime of spelling in the real world - that is, spelling correctly in writing.


This lifelong spelling ability grows over time. It grows through skills instruction (phonics, word origins, spelling rules, usage, etc.), through your child’s everyday writing, and through word study on specific words your child has not yet mastered. You can extend this teaching into your home.

 

 


Reading

Fifth graders will work in guided groups reading short fiction and nonfiction text while focusing on reading elements such as cause/effect, problem/solution, vocabulary, similes and metaphors, inferencing, author’s purpose, key details, sequencing and summarizing.  Students will also participate in novel studies focusing on communicating and collaborating with peers.



Writing

Fifth graders will continue to be instructed in writing using Thinking Maps and the Write From the Beginning curriculum.  We will be writing poems, personal narratives, informational, expository and persuasive writing pieces in fifth grade. We will also be doing written responses to our literature pieces this year.  Students will also work on daily grammar and spelling lessons.

 

Students will also be writing in their Family Journals every week.  Please look for this journal every Monday and write and return it by Friday morning.


Math

Pioneer uses Envision for our math program. Students are checked for understanding with each lesson and will be grouped with like peers based on needs and speed of instruction.  Students may also have differentiated assignments based on their needs. A website will be linked soon giving you access to the student text, videos and games.


Student mastery of math facts is very important in fifth grade.  We are teaching many concepts with multiple steps and students need basic fact mastery.  Students should be able to recall a fact accurately within three seconds. Please work on this with your child.





Science

Our focus in Science this year is earth, physical and life science.  


Earth Science:  This unit is called Water Planet and will talk about renewable and nonrenewable resources.  We will look at the geosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere and how they interact as a system. We also investigate how weather conditions change because of the uneven heating of Earth’s surface by the Sun’s energy. Outdoor Education will be a huge part of this unit.


Physical Science: This unit is called Mixtures and Solutions.  We develop, communicate and justify procedures to separate simple mixtures based on physical properties.


Life Science: This unit is called Living Things.  Students learn that all organisms have structures and systems with separate functions. They will learn how plants and animals carry out processes necessary for life. We will be looking at human body systems and their basic structures, functions and needs. We will use outside resources such as South Metro Fire Rescue to talk to students about brain injury in a class called Brain Matters. The school nurse will be invited to our classrooms to discuss the human reproductive system. Boys and girls will be separated for this talk. We also have the Parker Police Department in for the YESS program which will talk about internet safety, bullying vs. conflict, and alcohol, drug and smoking education.


Social Studies

We will study history, geography, civics and economics in fifth grade. Our main topics are early exploration, colonization, the American Revolution and states and regions.  

  • We will analyze historical sources from multiple points of views to understand history.  
  • We will use geographic tools and sources to answer questions about the geography of the United States.
  • We will talk about the causes and consequences of movement within the world and United States.
  • We will learn about the foundations of citizenship in the United States.
  • We will learn about the origins, structure of function of the US government.

Economics will be taught through the Young AmeriTowne curriculum.  Students will be taught about financial institutions, checking and savings accounts, credit, loans, and investments.  All students will apply and interview for jobs. We will go to Young AmeriTowne in April where students-turned-citizens apply concepts they’ve learned by working together to operate a 17-business town.
